Self-Esteem Optimization through Plant Therapy for Patients with Chronic Low Self-Esteem

Abstract
Background: Chronic low self-esteem is a common psychiatric nursing issue that often leads to social isolation and an inability to achieve self-actualization. Plant therapy has emerged as a potential occupational intervention to enhance self-efficacy and self-esteem in patients.
Objective: This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of plant therapy in improving self-esteem among patients with chronic low self-esteem at the Larasati Ward, RSJD dr. Arif Zainudin Surakarta.
Methods: This study utilized a case study design with a nursing care approach involving 8 research subjects. The intervention was conducted over six sessions, including education, gardening skills training, and self-concept evaluation. Self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) before and after the intervention.
Results: The results showed an increase in RSES scores for all subjects (score ≥30) after the intervention, indicating a transition from low to high self-esteem. 62.5% of respondents achieved "Full Resolution" status, while 37.5% achieved "Partial Resolution." Plant therapy was proven successful in disrupting negative thought cycles through two mechanisms: the establishment of a sense of mastery from successful plant care and cognitive distraction through nature-based mindfulness activities.
Conclusion: Plant therapy is an effective, practical, and holistic psychiatric nursing modality for enhancing patient self-esteem. Family support and social environment reinforcement are crucial variables for sustainable recovery.
